How the Tow Truck Cost Estimator works

Most tow companies charge a hookup fee to attach your vehicle, then a rate per mile. Nights, weekends, holidays, larger vehicles and winch-outs usually cost more. The estimator uses common ranges; your local tow company sets its own prices.

Example

A car towed 10 miles on a weekday: hookup of $75 to $125 plus 10 miles at $3 to $5 gives about $105 to $175.

Tips

  • Ask for the total price before the truck heads out, including any per-mile charges.
  • Check your car insurance, credit card or roadside plan; many include a free tow up to a set distance.
  • Have your location, vehicle and where you want it towed ready when you call.

Common questions

Why are some tows much more expensive? Long distances, heavy vehicles, accident scenes, storage fees and winch-outs all add to the bill.

Do I have to use the tow truck that shows up? If police called the tow for an accident or a blocked road, local rules may decide which company comes. Otherwise you can usually choose.
